The Cairn Terrier breed was developed on the Scottish Isle of Skye. It would seem this breed of dog existed since the fifteenth century. They were used to hunt badger, fox, and otter. The breed came in a wide variety of colors and were considered Scottish Terriers began as show dogs. At one point, the Cairn was called the Short-haired Skye as well as other names

They eventually found favor in England and then the US and is famous for it’s role as Toto, Dorothy’s dog in the Wizard of Oz. The Cairn Terrier is known as a working terrier.

Temperament

The Cairn Terrier is bold, clever and scrappy. It makes a popular family pet and loves to play with kids. It can even handle some rough housing. The Cairn can be aggressive towards other dogs and tends to give chase to small animals. It loves to hunt, sniff, and explore. Even though it’s small in size, this breed needs daily exercise to work off it’s pent up energy.

Upkeep and Health

Outdoor play and exercise fun time is a must with this breed. At least a moderate walk. It does best when it’s included and living with it’s family. It’s coat is wiry that should be combed twice a week and stripped of dead hair about twice a year.

There are no major health concerns. Minor conerns include glaucoma and portacaval shunt.
