The Cocker Spaniel is a resultant of the English Cocker Spaniel. It is an extremely popular breed. The Cocker became so popular that the breed was divided into three colors. It is believed the Cocker evolved from a English Cocker Spaniel crossed with a a smaller toy spaniel. It was originally bred for bird flushing and retrieving. It is sometimes referred to as an American Cocker Spaniel.
Temperament
The Coker Spaniel is a lively, sweet, and cheerful breed. It desire is to please it’s family which is one of the reasons it is such a popular breed and a perfect family pet. Their natural hunting instincts have faded over the years and it makes a fine city dog or country dog. A fenced in yard is not absolutely necessary. A short walk n a leash is adequate. Some tend to bark a lot so that is something to consider for the area you live in.
Upkeep and Health
The exercise requirements for the Cocker Spaniel are easy to manage. Just a small daily walk it all this breed needs. The upkeep need for it’s coat is a whole other story. If you don’t have the time to maintain the coat, it’s recommended that you keep the coat clipped short. The Cocker Spaniel should be brushed and combed about 3 times a week. They also require a monthly schedule of scissoring and clipping every month. The coat on the feet is thick and can sometimes carry debris. Extra attention needs to be paid to the eyes and ears. So, even though the breed makes an ideal pet for the household in regards to exercise and temperament, be aware that you’ll have to keep up on it’s grooming needs.
Major health concerns include glaucoma, PRA, patellar luxation, and cataracts.
Minor health concerns include CHD, allergies, liver disease, CHF, urinary stones, seborrhea, and ectropion.
