The German Shorthaired Pointer is known for being the ideal hunting dog that has a wide range of hunting capabilities.  It was breed to both trail and point and would hunt both mammals and birds.  It German Shorthaired Pointer breed was recognized by Germany back in the late 1800s but was only introduced to America in the 1920’s. It’s valued for it’s hunting skills and is an obedient companion.

Temperament

This breed is an active dog that is most happy when it’s used for hunting.  It requires a healthy dose of daily exercise and if it isn’t able to spend some of it’s energy, it can become frustrated and anxious. It can be overly rambunctious with children but usually makes a good family dog. It reacts positively with only gentle training. It may show some aggression towards other small animals due to it’s hunting instincts so use caution when it’s around small pets.

Upkeep and Health

Because it was bred for hunting, the German Shorthaired Pointer has a great deal of energy and is an active breed. It requires mental and physical stimulation and should be exercised for at least an hour a day.  They love the water and love to expend their energy swimming. It prefers to be part of the family and does best when it is allowed to live inside with family members.

The grooming requirements for this breed are minimal. Only an occasional brushing is need to remove dead hair.

Major health concerns include lymphedema. Minor health concerns include entropion, CHD, gastric torsion, OCD, and hypothyroidism.
