This dog is named after the nomadic Samoyed people who came to Siberia from central Asia. These people depended on reindeer for their food. They depended on the Samoyed dog to help herd the reindeer and to stand guard over the people from predators. At times they were also used to tow boats and sleds. Another job these dogs were given was to sleep with the children and keep them warm. It eventually became a popular sled dog.
The first Samoyed arrived in America in 1906 and is still a popular breed with Americans.
