The recent choice of the Obama family has created a large interest in this breed. The ancestry of the Portuguese water dog is shared with the poodle breed. It’s ancestors were herding dogs and showed an affinity for water, eventually using it’s skills to herd fish into nets, a tool to retrieve lost nets and fishing equipment and serving as a courier between boats or between boats and shore.
Temperament
The Portuguese Water Dog is a good choice for family’s, being a fun loving, easy going dog. This breed gets along well with other other dogs and animals, and is good with children.
Upkeep and Health
This is an active dog that needs daily physical and mental exercise and stimulation. It prefers being with the family and loves to share in the family activities. It’s coat should be combed every other day.
The only major health concern with this breed PRA – Progressive Retinal Atrophy – a genetic, inherited disease of the retina.
