The Scottish Terrier has a murky and confusing history stemming from the fact that all terriers origination from Scotland were referred to as Scottish Terriers. In the 1880s the first breed standards for the Scottish Terrier were put forth. The first Scottish Terrier to come to the states arrived in 1883. It was slowly gaining in popularity but it soared after World War II. That is because Franklin Roosevelt owned a Scotty and it was constantly at his side. It’s even buried next to him.

They eventually found favor in England and then the US and is famous for it’s role as Toto, Dorothy’s dog in the Wizard of Oz. The Cairn Terrier is known as a working terrier.

Temperament

The Scottish Terrier has a tough and rugged character. It tends to be a feisty dog and may show aggression towards other animals. It is friendly with strangers but always slightly reserved. It is completely devoted to it’s family and has a sensitive nature. Even though the Scottish Terrier is known for it’s independence it will misbehave if left alone too much.

Upkeep and Health

Scottish Terrier Show DogThe Scottish Terrier is a hearty breed that loves an adventure. It requires daily exercise. At minimum a daily walk or a boisterous game. It would only be able to tolerate moderate to warm climates. It is best suited for living in the house with it’s family.

It’s wiry coat needs to be combed about 3 times a week and additional shaping will be needed about every 3 months.

Major health concerns include CMO and vWD. . Minor concerns include cerebellar abiotrophy and patellar luxation.
