The Siberian Husky breed was developed by people inhabiting northeast Asia. It evolved over hundreds of years as a sled dog for these people. During the Alaskan gold rush, these dogs were used extensively. Dog racing became a favorite form of entertainment in the area. In the early 1900’s Siberian Huskies were first used in the race and performed admirably. In 1925 Siberian Huskies were credited with saving the town of Nome by racing life-saving serum for diphtheria to the remote area. Teams of huskies saved the day by racing 340 miles with the cure. It was around this time that Huskies were brought to the United States and Canada. During World War II Siberian Huskies were used by the Army for Search and Rescue operations.
It is one of the most popular of the Arctic dog breeds.
Temperament
The Siberian Husky makes a great family dog. It is alert, clever, and fun-loving. They like to run and if given the chance they will roam from home. The Siberian Husky usually gets along with other dogs in the house but may show aggression towards strange dogs. Sometimes they have a tendency to howl, dig and chew.
Upkeep and Health
The Siberian Husky is an active breed that can run for miles if given the chance. These dogs need long daily walks or an opportunity to run off leash if possible. It also loves to play games involving pulling and loves the winter weather. Although it’s quite capable of living in cold weather, it should also be socialized with the family. It requires canine or human companionship.
The Husky’s coat should be brushed once or twice a week and daily during the shedding season.
This breed has no major health concerns.
Minor health concerns include: PRA, cataract and hypothyroidism.
