Evidence of the Standard Schnauzer exists as early as the fourteenth century. It was valued as a household pet and as a hunting companion. It is guessed that the breed was derived from crossing wire-haired pinschers with black German Poodles and gray wolf spitz. The Schnauzer was a guard dog as well as a rat catcher. It was known for its intelligence and alert nature and was classified as a working dog. During World War I there were used as dispatch carriers and was also used by the police.By the 1900’s they became a very popular show dog although American dog fanciers took longer to warm to the breed.

Standard Schnauzer

The Standard Schnauzer has a bold and lively personality. It makes for a fun loving companion. It’s necessary to give it mental stimulation and adequate exercise or it may become mischievous. If you decide you want to raise this breed you must do it with firm discipline and great patience.
The Schnauzer makes a good family pet and is very good with children. It’s usually very good when getting along with other family pets but can be aggressive towards strange animals. Its guardian nature also makes them a bit reserved with strangers. This is their natural protective instincts kicking in.

Upkeep and Health

The Standard Schnauzer should be given daily exercise. A long walk on a leash or a vigorous and tiring game session to wear them out is a good idea. It can survive only in temperate climates but is better off living with the family. It is headstrong so stimulating this breed with vigorous exercise and play is necessary to avoid behavioral problems.

The Schnauzer has a harsh coat that should be combed a couple times a week plus an occasional grooming to shape it’s coat. It’s recommended this be done 4 times a year.

This breed has no major health concerns.

Minor health concerns include: CHD and follicular dermatitis.
