The Bernese Mountain Dog is the only Swiss mountain dog to have a long and silky coat. It’s a strong breed that can tolerate the Alpine weather and act as a drover and herder. The Bernese Mountain Dog was a popular breed with farmers for its abilities to help with livestock. In the 1800’s the breed was almost lost but for a man doing a study on the Swiss mountain dogs. He helped initiate its popularity throughout Switzerland and Europe. The Bernese Mountain Dog came stateside in 1926.

Temperament

The Bernese Mountain Dog is known for its calm and easy going disposition. It’s known for its loyalty and devotion. As with larger breeds, the Bernese Mountain Dog is gentle with children. It’s usually reserved around new people and gets along with most other household pets.

Upkeep and Health

Major health concerns include CHD , PRA, and gastric torsion. Minor health concerns include HOD, osteosarcoma, hypothroidism, and megaesophagus.
