Weight: 45-65 lb

Life span is 8-12 years

The Chow Chow is a breed known in China for hundreds of years. It may have been used for hunting but it’s history is not accurately documented. Their numbers declined after Imperial hunts were obsolete but some of the line was kept alive through dogs cared for in monasteries and with wealthier families. More stories say that the breed was used as a source for pelts and food in Mongolia and Manchuria.

They were brought to England in the 1800s and then to America. Queen Victoria took a shine to this dog which helped to boost their popularity. It has a noble face and at one time was the sixth most popular breed in America. It is best known for it’s black tongue.

The Chow Chow has is an animal that acts somewhat aloof. It has an aristocratic air about it and is usually reserved. This dog breed tends to be leary of strangers and can display aggression towards other dogs. It has a serious disposition and is not overly demonstrative even with family. It should be included and socialized with the family

Upkeep and Health

The Chow Chow requires some outdoor activity and does best in cooler weather. It likes some low key exercise but you should be careful to avoid bringing this breed out in the heat of the day. The Chows with the smooth type of coat needs only weekly brushing. The dogs with the rough type of coat should be brushed every other day and then daily when it’s shedding.

Major health concerns include CHD, entropion, and patellar luxation. Minor health concerns include elbow dysplasia, cataract, distichiasis, and gastric torsion.
