The Bull Terrier was originally bred for the purpose of barbaric dog fighting. Around the year 1835, an old English Terrier and a Bulldog were crossed and bred for this purpose. Eventually, dog fighting was deemed illegal and this breed was further refined to compete and to be more physically appealing to breeders. The Bull Terrier is considered a masculine dog that had no problem defending themselves but were not prone to starting a fight.

It’s easy to recognize with it’s uniquely shaped head. They were bred to become more streamline but still maintain a muscular, stocky image. Their friendly, goofy face has made them a popular breed for advertising and in movies.

Temperament

This breed is known for it’s assertive, comical, and mischievous nature. The Bull Terrier is stubborn and sees things HIS way! It should be exercised daily and given mental stimulation as well. It is sweet and affectionate with it’s owners. Because it is a devoted breed – it usually shows aggression towards other dogs and small animals.

Upkeep and Health

The Bull Terrier is an active, energetic breed that does best when given adequate physical and mental stimulation and exercise. They like to run. It should live inside with the family and does not tolerate extreme temperatures very well. It’s coat requires minimum care.

Major health concerns include deafness and kidney problems. Minor health concerns include SAS, mitral stenosis, compulsive behavior, and allergies.
