The Golden Retriever was recognized as an official breed in 1912 but the AKC did not register them until 1927.  It was first valued for it’s hunting abilities.  It was some time later that they were valued as a favorite breed for the role of a family dog. It is still one of the most popular breeds in America.

Temperament

The Golden Retriever is well known for being the perfect family dog. It has an obedient and devoted nature. It has an active nature and needs mental and physical exercise.  If it doesn’t get a healthy dose of both, you may see this breed exhibiting some behavioral problems. If you take the time to train and exercise your Golden they will be well behaved and calm while home.  They love games especially involving retrieving and they love to carry items in their mouths.

Upkeep and Health

The Golden Retriever is athletic and strong and needs mental and physical exercising on a daily basis. The coat doesn’t tend to mat but should be brushed about twice a week. It’s physically able to live outdoors but that would be unfair to such a social breed. It’s meant to be a family dog.

Major health concerns include CHD , hot spots, allergies, ear infections, lymphoma and hemangiosarcoma. Minor health concerns include eye disorders, mast cell tumors, SAS, and elbow dysplasia.
