Even though the Mastiff family is one of the oldest around, the mastiff is more recent. In the days of Caesar, the mastiffs were used in war. In medieval times, they were used for hunting and as guard dogs. Eventually mastiffs were, sadly, used for dog fighting, bull baiting, and bear baiting. The breed was almost decimated by World War II, but enough of the breed had been imported to America by then and the breed managed to survive.
Temperament
This breed is a calm, good-natured, surprisingly gentle type of dog. As with most larger breeds, the temperament of the mastiff is sweet and gentle. It is well mannered but requires lots of room to stretch out and be comfortable. They are a loyal dog and known for being a devoted family dog and have a reputation for being great with children.

Upkeep and Health
The Mastiff needs just moderate exercise. A daily walk or game is enough to satisfy their exercise requirements. It doesn’t like hot weather and doesn’t do well in the heat. Even though it may be tough enough to live outside, the Mastiff is best when it’s able to live in a loving home with it’s family. It has a tendency to drool. Minimum care is needed for their coat.
Major health concerns include CHD and gastric torsion. Minor health concerns include elbow dysplasia, osteosarcoma and cystinuria.
