The Airedale is known as the King of Terriers. It is the tallest breed in the terrier category. Terriers were once prized by Yorkshire hunters for hunting water rats to foxes. They were also talented at finding and retrieving birds. Around the mid 1800s they were crossed with Otterhounds to improve their hunting skills around water. This resulted in the Airedale Terrier which was adept at otter hunting. The breed was recognized in 1878 and was eventually crossed with Irish and Bull Terriers in order to breed out remnants of the Otterhound cross. It’s size and talents continued to make this a popular breed for big game hunting. It is sometimes used in police work and is also popular as a family pet.
