There is strong evidence to prove that the Chinese Shar-Pei existed as early as the thirteenth century.  Like the Chow Chow which also comes from China, the Shar-Pei has a black tongue. It is likely that these two breeds share a common ancestry. In its early existence, the Shar-Pei was a working dog. They acted as a guard dog, wild boar hunter, and also a dog fighter. Sadly, once China became communist most dogs were eliminated. A few specimens remained in some of the smaller cities outside but close to China. So the breed experienced a tenuous existence through the years until 1973. This is when dog fanciers were notified of the low number of Shar-Peis that existed. That was when breeders saved them from possible extinction.

Temperament

The Chinese Shar-Pei is a serious and self-assured breed. It also can demonstrate a stubborn streak. Although it is reserved it is completely devoted to its family. It is wary of strangers and can be very suspicious. It usually can acclimate to other family pets but they typically show aggression when confronted with strange dogs.  The Shar-Pei is also known for chasing livestock and other animals.

Upkeep and Health

The Shar-Pei should be given a moderate dose of exercise every day. It should not be kept as an outdoor dog.  Its coat has a texture like gritty sandpaper. If you pet and rub the coat in a backward direction, the feeling will be uncomfortable and can even cause welts on your skin. They should be brushed at least once a week but the wrinkles that are its trademark require regular attention from its owners to avoid irritations developing.

Major health concerns include CHD and entropion. Minor health concerns include allergies, lip and skin fold pyodermas and otitis externa.
