There is evidence that the Keeshond was well established in Holland as a companion and watchdog. It was later used a s a barge dog because it was often used on small boats navigating the Rhine River.  Prior to the French Revolution, the leader of the Patriot faction was a fan of the breed and eventually it became a symbol of the Patriots. When the Patriots lost political favor, many owners of this breed disposed of their dogs so they weren’t identified with the losing party. Eventually their use as a barge dog also dwindled making the breed almost extinct.  The breed recovered and has been recognized by the AKC since 1930.

Temperament

The Keeshond makes a great companion for children or adults.  It is intelligent and learns quickly. Although it is an alert watchdog, the Keeshond is a very friendly breed. They are energetic, playful, and loving but they’re also content to be relaxed and laid back.

Upkeep and Health

The Keeshond breed needs a moderate amount of exercise which can be satisfied with a walk and a game. It prefers to live inside with the family.  Its double coat requires brushing a couple times a week and possibly more frequently during the shedding season.

Major health concerns include CHD, skin problems, epilepsy, and patellar luxation. Minor health concerns include mitral valve insufficiency and renal cortical hypoplasia.
