The Norwegian Elkhound’s roots goes back to the spitz breeds. It was once used for tracking moose and other large game and is still used for moose hunting in some Scandinavia countries. The Elkhound’s job was to hunt moose and hold it at bay until the hunter arrived. Its other roles include herder, defender, and guardian. The AKC recognized the breed around the year 1930.
Temperament
The Norwegian Elkhound is bold and playful. It loves the cold weather and needs daily exercise or it may exhibit destructive and disruptive behavior. It is friendly toward people it doesn’t know but has some problems getting along with other dogs. It is known for being a barker and has to be trained at a young age to behave on its leash as it also has an independent streak.

Upkeep and Health
Because of its ability to hunt in challenging weather, the Norwegian Elkhound has a huge resource of energy. It requires daily exercise in the form of a jog, long walk, or vigorous play session. It loves to live with the family but with its thick coat, it can tolerate very cold temperatures. During its shedding season, this breed requires daily brushing but most of the year, only twice a week is required.
Major health concern is CHD. Minor health concerns include kidney disease, hot spots, and sebaceous cysts.
