The Italian Greyhound breed goes back many centuries. They came to Europe in the 17th century and quickly became popular with the nobility. It reached it's peak of popularity during the reign of Queen Victoria. It fell out of favor after that peak and almost became extinct during World War II. Over the years, they established themselves as a popular breed once again and is enjoying a second resurgence of popularity amongst dog lovers.
Temperament
The Italian Greyhound loves to run and chase and has an extremely gentle and sensitive nature. It can be timid and shy with strangers. It is good with children, other family pets, other dogs and completely devoted to the family unit. Although consideration should be given to it's light build and be aware that it can easily be injured by boisterous kids and larger animals.
Upkeep and Health
Life span is 12-15 years
The Italian Greyhound hates the cold but does like a daily romp in the outdoors. Their exercise requirements can be achieved with a short walk or yard play. It loves to sprint in a fenced area. They cannot survive outdoors. Caring for their coat is minimal effort with only occasional brushing required to remove dead hair. It is recommended that their teeth be brushed on a regular basis.
Major health concern is periodontal disease.
